Suileag Bothy

This bothy or shelter on Glencanisp Estate is looked after by the Mountain Bothies Association (MBA) (www.mountainbothies.org.uk).

The MBA, like us, is a charity and they maintain about 100 shelters for walkers and mountaineers in some of the remotest parts of Britain. If you are going to use the bothy, it is a good idea to join the MBA as a member or at least donate via their website, to help them keep going.

Suileag Bothy is not far off the main track from Glencanisp to Elphin. It is several hours walk from the nearest road. The OS map reference is NC149212. It is at 137m altitude.

The bothy is free to use, but there is little more than a wind and watertight structure which provides a dry place to sleep.

There is no booking system, and you must share it with others if they turn up.

The MBA’s Bothy Code applies:-

  • Respect the bothy

  • Respect other users

  • Respect the surroundings

  • Respect the agreement with the host estate

  • Respect the restriction on numbers

Check out the MBA’s website for more information (www.mountainbothies.org.uk).
