Path to Elphin

This is the longest route on the Estates and runs roughly east/west from near Elphin to Glencanisp for around 19 km between the peaks of Suilven on the south and Canisp to the north and along a succession of lochs and streams. The route is marked on the OS maps. It is a pretty flat one for our landscape.

There is an off-road car park with room for 4 or 5 cars on the west side of the A835 between Elphin and Ledmore Junction, where it joins the A837. The OS grid reference is NC229121. And there is a signpost pointing the way.

From Lochinver drive or walk up the road to Glencanisp (parking in the walkers’ car park if you drive), and then follow the path toward Suilven, before turning off from that path at NC169194.

There are many fine views on this walk. There are the mountains already mentioned, the expanse of Loch Cam and its island. You also have a chance of seeing divers and their chicks at the right time of year and if you have sharp eyesight.  Then it is past Loch Fada and Loch na Gainimh, near where I once saw a pair of golden eagles mating on a bitterly cold February morning.
